Program: Finding your Authentic Voice: You Can't Fake it to Make it!
Speaker: Samantha Paris, founder of Voicetrax in Sausalito
Acclaimed voice actor, educator, entrepreneur and author Samantha Paris will offer a fascinating peek behind the curtain on the intriguing yet little-understood world of voice acting--which can be considered America's most influential and invisible art. In this interactive and lively program, Samantha will discuss lessons learned through her colorful and rich career as a voice actor and trainer/mentor of 15,000 aspiring and working voice actors. She will share insights into the transformative nature of voice-over studies in terms of finding your own, authentic voice. And as a special treat, attendees will have the chance to read real commercial scripts and receive direction/feedback from Samantha to get a taste of the voice acting experience.
Samantha Paris is a multiple award-winning voice actor, acclaimed educator, entrepreneur and author of “Finding the Bunny: The secrets of America’s most influential and invisible art revealed through the struggles of one woman’s journey” (Voice Haven Productions, 2018). Her memoir was optioned in 2019 by Warner Brothers for development into a television series.
Since establishing Voicetrax San Francisco in 1988--which actually is based in Sausalito-- Samantha has trained more than 15,000 aspiring and working voice actors in the Bay Area, Southern California, and from around the world now, thanks to video conferencing. Voicetrax is the nation's largest, most comprehensive and respected voice-over academy. Students come from all walks of life, backgrounds and interests--from realtors, accountants, and lawyers to soccer moms, belly dancers, police officers and more--many of whom book voice-over jobs regularly to augment their incomes, and many others make voice-over their living full-time (and lucratively so). In addition to the outstanding training that students get at Voicetrax, they also experience an extraordinary sense of community, camaraderie and support in this unique haven for voice actors.
Samantha's own single-minded dream of becoming an actress began as a little girl growing up in Southern California, under her given name, Bobbi Block. She began performing at the age of five, and took her first voice-over class at age fifteen. One year later, she landed an agent and saw her fervent dreams take flight. Over the next twelve years, Samantha enjoyed a career that included over 1,000 national and regional commercials, roles in nearly 200 half-hour animated television cartoon shows, including the mega-hit cult series
PROGRAM TITLE: UNDER THE TAPE
FBI Special Agent Gail Paresa, Senior Team Leader
FBI EVIDENCE RESPONSE TEAM (ERT)
Join FBI Special Agent Gail Paresa as she brings you under the crime scene tape to share her experiences while processing some of the FBI’s most notable crime scenes. With 35 years in law enforcement, 31 of those years with the FBI, SA Paresa now leads the San Francisco Division Evidence Response Team (ERT). The team covers a territory stretching from the Oregon border to King City, and assists other ERT teams across the country. As an ERT Adjunct Professor, SA Paresa has taught crime scene courses to law enforcement personnel from across the globe (in Cameroon, Kenya, and Thailand), as well as in Northern California and Hawaii.
SA Paresa attended Stanford University (class of ’85), and discovered an unexpected love for archaeology and history as the Stanford-in-Greece program took her to survey the ancient city of Panakton. Through early experiences as a volunteer in the “Bone Room” of the Bishop Museum in Hawaii and gluing together broken potsherds from the 1906 earthquake at the Stanford Museum, she developed an eye for detail and investigation, all crucial traits for the crime scene investigator. At first as a collateral duty, and later as the full-time Senior Team Leader, ERT became her passion. Along the way she found herself inside the cabin of the Unabomer, knee-deep in the Freshkills Landfill after 9/11, and in the hidden backyard where Jaycee Dugard was kept hostage for 18 years. In 2019, for the first time in SF ERT history, the team was honored with an award from Crime Stoppers for processing the horrific scene of the Gilroy Garlic Festival mass shooting, a tragedy much too close to home.
