Coffee with Global Impact

Coffee launched this woman ….  and now she’s using coffee to build communities

Meet Helen Russell, co-founder of Equator Coffees & Teas

Business partners Brooke McDonnell and Helen Russell began roasting coffee in a Marin garage in 1995 and Equator became a well-loved boutique “concierge” roaster.  Over time Helen and Brooke realized they were uniquely positioned at the center of four communities—the farmers cultivating the coffee, the wholesale customers buying the coffee, the employees helping to grow the business, and, more recently, the local communities supporting Equator cafés. Learning how to be a good partner to each continues to be a motivating force for doing business.

Today Equator is a leader in sustainability and social responsibility, supporting projects around the world that improve quality of life and food security in coffee growing regions.  The company has won numerous awards for both the quality of their products and for successful entrepreneurship.  Equator has been included in the San Francisco Business Times’ Top 100 Women-Owned Businesses 12 years in a row.  Last year the company was named national Small Business of the Year by the SBA and the founders were honored at a ceremony and reception in Washington D.C.
